Sound in Place is a project I created to explore the subjective experiences music and sound can produce. This exploration delves into the sounds, melodies, and lyrics that all contribute to conjuring up the vivid worlds we enter upon listening to a song.

In reading written stories, the reader translates and transforms the author’s language into their own interpreted fantasy. The written words always stay the same, but each reader’s vision remains distinct from others’ imaginings. The process of listening to music can do the same–a song may feel like it’s set in the winter for some, while for others it might be more of a summer tune, etc. In reading songs, one engages with the cinemas of sound, and a wider, resolute image is drawn (like making a mental movie).

Ultimately, the intention is to discover the places these sounds reside in, and to articulate how it would feel to inhabit these places using all of the senses (envisioning the scenery, tasting and smelling the ‘notes’ of each song the way one samples a high-end coffee, and feeling the emotional qualities from what arises in one’s subconscious).

As it is all subjective and surreal, this work may not resonate with everyone completely. But in any case, I hope you enjoy my introspections on some of my favorite music. :)
